Greenwood Christian football loses at Shortridge

Greenwood Christian managed to ruin Edinburgh’s senior night two weeks ago. The Cougars didn’t get to play spoiler at Shortridge on Friday night.

The host Blue Devils stormed out to a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and continued piling on, sending GCA home with a 50-0 defeat — its first-ever shutout loss.

“Playing a senior-strong 4A team, we were up for the challenge,” Cougars coach Andre Dobson said. “We’re learning a lot. Hats off to them and the way they played tonight.”

Down 30-0 at the half, the Cougars gave up two more touchdowns in the third period to fall behind by 42. The last quarter-plus was played with a running clock.

GCA, now 2-2 against varsity opponents, will wrap up its inaugural season next Saturday with a game against Heritage Christian’s junior varsity at Center Grove Middle School North.

Despite back-to-back blowout losses, Dobson is still pleased with what he’s seen from his team over this stretch of three road games against established varsity squads.

“They never give up,” he said. “They’re competitors, and I absolutely love that about them. You don’t see that in the score, but in the second half of this game we had the backup quarterback in — our starter went down — and they just never gave up. … They’re an awesome group of young men.”
