Police release more details on Greenwood shots fired incident

Police have released more information regarding a shots fired incident at a Greenwood healthcare facility on Monday.

Greenwood police were called to U.S. Renal Care, 973 N. Emerson Avenue, at 2:13 p.m. Monday to assist the Greenwood Fire Department with a patient at the facility. 911 dispatchers told first responders there were reports of multiple gunshots at the facility, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

EMS personnel told police that a woman had gone into a single stall in the facility’s restroom by herself. The woman was allegedly upset about the treatment she had received and needed to use the restroom, according to the report.

The woman has not been arrested or formally charged, so she will not be named in this story.

Shortly after the woman allegedly entered the restroom, gunshots were heard from inside the restroom. EMS personnel entered the restroom, and officers ensured that the woman was alone inside the restroom. No one was injured during the incident, the report says.

She allegedly shot four bullets into the ceiling of the restroom. She was legally carrying the gun, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief of police.

The woman was transported to an Indianapolis hospital, where she went voluntarily. She remains at the hospital, and a detective is following up on the case before determining if she will be arrested, according to police.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, U.S. Renal Care officials said they were thankful to law enforcement for deescalating the situation and removing the woman from the premises.

“Our employees immediately mobilized safety protocols and contacted law enforcement who responded quickly,” officials said.

Company leadership and lead social workers are reaching out to everyone exposed to the incident to ensure their well-being, officials said.
