Trojans take third at Kokomo tournament
After putting together the best start in program history, Class 4A No. 8 Center Grove lost a 51-49 heartbreaker to host Kokomo in the semifinals of the Phil Cox Memorial tournament on Friday.
Junior forward Will Spellman had 14 points and three rebounds for the Trojans, and junior guard Joey Schmitz added 14 points and seven boards; senior guard Marcus Ankney provided nine points.
In the third-place game, Center Grove (10-1) defeated former conference rival Warren Central, 47-37, behind Ankney’s 16 points, 12 from Spellman and nine from senior guard Ethan McComb. Spellman grabbed a team-high seven boards.
Prior to Friday’s games, coach Zach Hahn’s squad was the only Center Grove team to win its first nine games, eclipsing two 8-0 starters (1950-51 and 1987-88) and the 7-0 Trojans of 1933-34.
