College notebook: Hill continues to excel for Trine softball

The Trine softball team lost to Calvin, 13-7, in the first game of a doubleheader despite sophomore Debbie Hill, a Whiteland graduate and the team’s starting pitcher, hitting a triple and working 4 2/3 innings in the circle.

Hill has produced a .392 batting average with 14 doubles and six home runs as the Thunder won 26 of their first 29 games this season. Her pitching record is 8-1 with a 1.20 earned-run average.

Whiteland

Mount St. Joseph junior Macy Cornelius doubled in a 4-2 victory at Transylvania and singled in a 7-2 loss to the Pioneers.

Morehead State senior pitcher Luke Helton notched the win in a 10-6 decision over visiting Western Illinois, working seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out nine.

Center Grove

Indiana shortstop Tyler Cerny doubled, singled twice and stole a base as the Hoosiers downed visiting Penn State, 10-9. The sophomore singled and scored two runs in IU’s 12-3 defeat of the Nittany Lions and delivered a two-run single in a 5-4 loss to Evansville.

Pitcher Drue Young improved his season record to 5-2, working the first six frames and striking out seven in Indiana Wesleyan’s 6-4 victory at Taylor.

IU Kokomo pitcher Asa Christie struck out two batters in 1 2/3 innings of relief in a 11-6 loss to IU-Southeast.

Franklin College senior catcher Adam Taylor singled and scored two runs in a 15-12 loss to visiting Mount St. Joseph.

Senior third baseman Kaci Finchum singled and scored a run in Mount St. Joseph’s 4-2 softball win at Transylvania, and singled in a 7-2 loss.

Trey Thixton won matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles as Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis scored a 6-1 decision over Lourdes.

Luke Beetz tied for 28th individually and teammate Brandon Heffner was 53rd as Marian men’s golf won the 15-team Ackerman-Allen Invitational.

UIndy senior Gabrielle Harrell placed ninth in the 10,000-meter run at Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville, while Brandon Wheat was 10th in the men’s 100-meter dash.

Greenwood

Junior tennis player Ethan Gray won his match at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to help Indiana Wesleyan defeat Lourdes, 6-1.

Franklin College senior Mallory Watson was part of the fourth-place 4×400 relay as the Grizzlies participated in the Indiana Division III Championships.

UIndy’s Emily Bonser won the shot put competition at the Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville.

Sophomore center fielder Anna Pritchett singled three times, stole a base and scored two runs to help lead Marian softball to a 10-7 victory at Bethel.

Senior catcher Lexy Rees finished with two singles and a double and Dominique Proctor singled and stole a base as the UIndy softball squad won a pair of 4-0 decisions at Cedarville.

Franklin

Senior Eli Cochrane was part of Franklin College’s second-place 4×400 relay as the Grizzlies participated in the Indiana Division III Championships.

UIndy sophomore Ava Ray tied for 32nd place with scores of 80, 77 and 76 as the Greyhounds won the UMSL Spring Invitational.

Indian Creek

Marian University junior Luci Woodrum placed 12th in the 5,000-meter run as the Knights participated in the We Fly Challenge at Ball State.

Franklin College senior Dylan Sprong pitched an inning of relief, allowing two hits and striking out one, as the Grizzlies lost to Mount St. Joseph, 13-6.
