Boys basketball

Trojans knock off Panthers

Ethan McComb scored 20 points and Will Spellman added 15 as Class 4A No. 7 Center Grove won at previously unbeaten Jennings County on Saturday, 68-66. Jalen Bundy and Owen Baker added nine points apiece for the Trojans (12-1), with Bundy grabbing 10 rebounds. Marcus Ankney scored eight points and Joey Schmitz seven.

Cougars nipped in OT

Greenwood Christian dropped a 57-56 overtime battle at Shortridge. Blake Shewmaker scored 19 points to lead the Cougars (6-5), who got 13 from Evan McIntire and 11 from Patrick Booher.

Girls basketball

Braves cruise past Eagles

Faith Wiseman’s 18 points and 14 rebounds led Class 3A No. 3 Indian Creek to a 60-33 rout of visiting Brown County on Saturday. Abby Fleetwood added 11 points and six assists for the Braves (18-0, 7-0 WIC).

Center Grove picks up road win

Center Grove earned a 54-49 victory at Jennings County. Ella Hobson paced the Trojans (14-4) with 16 points, while Ali Wiesmann contributed 11.

Swimming and diving

Grizzly Cub boys win Mid-State

Franklin’s boys swam to victory in the Mid-State Conference meet on Saturday, with the girls placing second to Plainfield. Brady Campbell (200 and 500 freestyle) and Aleksandr Ries (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) were both double individual winners for the Grizzly Cub boys, who also got first-place efforts from Isaac Layton in the 100 butterfly and the 200 medley and freestyle relay teams. Franklin’s girls took the 400 free relay and got individual victories from Lili Ratzlaff (200 and 500 free), Allie Lacy (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Jenna Miller( 100 free) and Camy Quiggins (diving).

Whiteland’s girls finished third and the boys seventh; Greenwood’s girls were fourth and its boys fifth.

Wrestling

Trojans third at state duals

Center Grove finished third at the IHSWCA Team State Duals in Brownsburg on Saturday. The Trojans beat Evansville Mater Dei 28-24 in the first round before losing to the host Bulldogs, 38-25, in a semifinal match. Center Grove then beat Penn 49-21 in a consolation semifinal and Cathedral 36-27 in the third-place match. Charlie LaRocca (113 pounds), Noah Clouser (170) and Kaden McConnell (195 and 220) were all a perfect 4-0 on the day.

Franklin College

Swimmers compete in Kentucky

Franklin College’s men finished second and the women third over the weekend in the Colonel Classic at Centre. The Grizzly men won the 400 and 800 freestyle relays and got individual victories from Jack Burke (100 butterfly, 200 backstroke), Kosmo Wojack (400 IM, 200 butterfly) and Gauge Creech (1-meter diving). The women got wins from Caileigh McCafferty (200 IM), Samantha Phillips (200 fly) and Faith Jackson (1-meter diving).

Women’s basketball falls at home

Despite career highs of 21 points from Sarah O’Day and 19 from Georgia Hanauer, Franklin College suffered a 79-71 home loss against Anderson on Saturday. Maddie Barnes scored 11 points and Jordan Coon added nine for the Grizzlies (6-7, 3-2 HCAC).

Men’s basketball goes cold in loss

Shooting just 31% from the floor, Franklin College lost to visiting Anderson, 72-61. Carter Crowe had 15 points for the Grizzlies (7-6, 3-3 HCAC), followed by Ryan Bostic with 12, Nathaniel Hoffman with 11 and Lynn King with nine.
