Girls basketball

Warriors dominate Cardinals

Whiteland started hot and rolled to a 72-45 home win over Southport on Thursday. Gwen Higdon scored 19 points to lead the Warriors (11-8), who built a 23-6 lead in the first quarter. Emma Piercy finished with 15 points, followed by Carly VonDielingen with 14, Addison Emberton 11 and Sophia Dyer eight.

Grizzly Cubs overpower Quakers

Franklin used a 30-point second quarter to pull away for a 77-50 win at Plainfield on Wednesday. Erica Buening scored 14 points for the Grizzly Cubs (11-5, 4-1 Mid-State) and was joined in double digits by Brooklyn York (13), Lauren Klem (12) and Emma Sappenfield (10).

Boys basketball

Royals eliminated from tourney

Roncalli lost to Pike, 63-52, in Marion County tournament action on Wednesday. Drew Kegerreis led the Royals (5-6) with 17 points, while Luke Kegerreis and Nolan Tunny added 12 apiece.

Trojans top Flashes

Center Grove swept visiting Franklin Central on Thursday, with the girls taking a 137-48 victory and the boys winning by a 114-69 margin. The girls won both freestyle relays and got individual first places from Lara Phipps (200 IM, 100 butterfly), Izzie Ferguson (200 freestyle), Lexi Stuart (50 free), Mia Prusiecki (diving), Tenley Wilkins (100 free), Kayla Fischer (500 free) and Grace Clarkston (100 backstroke). Connor Conkin (500 free, 100 breaststroke), Henry Lyness (200 IM), Isaac Lewis (50 free), Sam Smith (100 butterfly), Jonah Brandon (100 free) and Evan Hernandez (100 back) all earned wins for the Trojan boys, who also took all three relays.

Woodmen sweep three-way

Greenwood’s boys and girls both defeated Beech Grove and Scecina, with the girls beating the runner-up Hornets by 72 points and the boys pulling out a two-point win. The girls took two of three relays and got individual wins from Hailey Peckinpaugh (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Ryann Marker (50 free, 100 breaststroke), Naomi Weaver (200 IM), Eleanor Guipe (500 free) and Maria Mears (100 backstroke). The boys also won two relays and got first-place efforts from Lucas Young (200 and 500 free), Jackson Simms (50 free, 100 back), Ethan Rose (200 IM) and Ben Wehnert (100 fly).

IHSAA changes postseason format

The IHSAA announced a shift from a four-week postseason to three weeks, with the semistate round to be eliminated. Beginning in the fall, there will be 25 sectional meets feeding into five regionals, with the state finals to be held the following week. State will still be held on the same weekend; sectionals will take place a week later than in the past.

The top five teams and next 15 individuals from each site will advance out of both the sectional and regional rounds.
