Richard “Dickie” Herman Ham

GREENWOOD

Richard “Dickie” Herman Ham, 75, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023 at his residence in Greenwood surrounded by his family.

He was born on September 30, 1947 in Franklin, Indiana to Elmer and Mildred (Richards) Ham. He is survived by three children, Meghann Ham, Miranda Vaiagae (Matthew) and Matthew Ham; grandchildren, Devan Aube (Brooke), Tabitha Aube, Samantha Aube, Kendra Erdmann, Tyler Ray, Kamea Vaiagae and Kailee Vaiagae; great-grandchildren, Emma, Allie, Lanaeya, Javion and Layanna; sister, Doris (Ham) Burgett and his loyal dog, Major. He was preceded in passing by his parents and sister, Dorothy McClure.

Richard was a 1965 graduate of Nineveh High School. He was a proud veteran who served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970 and served in the United States National Guard from 1971 to 1972. Anytime Richard saw a fellow veteran in public he always made it a point to thank them for their service. Everywhere he went, Richard was able to talk to complete strangers and walk away with a new friend.

He was employed by Allison Transmission (General Motors) and retired after thirty-two years of dedicated service. Richard was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Whiteland; the American Legion, Fleet Reserve Association and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Before Richard’s health declined, he enjoyed spending his time outside fishing, hunting, farming and camping. He always made time for his friends and family and was very close to his nephews. He had fond memories of living in West Virginia and loved being on the mountains. Later in life, Richard enjoyed having his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren around him. His faithful companion, Major, could always be found by his side at home. When he was able, Richard enjoyed visiting with his neighbors and going out to eat.

A Celebration of Life Service for Richard will be conducted on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) with visitation on Monday, January 16th from 11:00 a.m. to time of service at the funeral home.
