Letter to the Editor: Trump should just disappear

To the Editor:

The Jan. 6 Committee has ended and its findings have been made public. They recommend that the Department of Justice proceed with four criminal charges against the former president: assisting or aiding an insurrection, conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to make false statements and obstructing an official proceeding of Congress. These are very serious charges, so now what? On one level I would like to see Donald J. Trump tried, and if convicted sent to prison; but, if Trump is tried in court the trial will probably last for months if not years, and it will increase exponentially the partisan divide in the nation. A conviction could lead to a level of public violence rarely seen in this country.

For my part, I would simply like the former president to go away. I want never again to see him in my newspaper, on television, or on my cell phone. He has been an extraordinarily disruptive influence in the country for too long. Why have we allowed this self-centered narcissist and would be usurper of power to push the country around like the bully he is? Make it impossible for him to ever hold political office again, strip him of constant media coverage, and send him home to Mar-a-Largo to spend his declining years on the golf course in splendid isolation. Were that possible the country would let out a deep sigh of relief.
