Police: Indy man assaulted, robbed Franklin man in his driveway

An Indianapolis man was arrested Thursday afternoon after police say he assaulted and robbed a Franklin man in his driveway on Tuesday.

Michael J. Brown, 58 of Indianapolis, was arrested on a charge of robbery causing bodily injury, a level 3 felony.

The incident was reported at 5:44 p.m. on Tuesday after a Franklin man reported he was assaulted in the 800 block of Paris Drive following a trip to Horseshoe Casino in Shelbyville. The man told police a man, later identified as Brown, approached him after he exited his vehicle at home, according to a Franklin police report.

Brown allegedly first asked for some water and directions to Batesville. He later allegedly punched him in the back of the head, knocking him to the ground. Brown then kicked the man, stole his wallet and about $6,000 cash that he had won at the casino, the report says.

The man was bleeding and had a knot on the back of his head when police arrived, the report says.

The man told police he saw Brown when he was at the casino playing the $25 Blackjack table and says it is likely Brown witnessed him win and followed him home, the report says.

Police also reviewed video from the casino that showed Brown following the man, the report says.

The man offered a description of Brown and his vehicle and police were able to locate him with help from the city’s Flock camera system, which caught the license plate registered to Brown with a camera posted on King Street near Interstate 65, the report says.

Franklin police requested Indianapolis Metropolitan Police check Brown’s address on the day of the incident, but it took until Thursday to bring him in for questioning, according to the police report and a press release on the arrest.

Brown was questioned Thursday afternoon and booked in the Johnson County jail following the questioning, police chief Kirby Cochran said.

“This was a targeted attack, and the Franklin Police Department has no reason to believe that there are any further threats to the neighborhood or Franklin community,” Cochran said in a press release on the incident.
