Deputies: Morgantown man drunkenly drove into house

A Morgantown man was arrested after sheriff’s deputies say he drunkenly drove into a house while trying to avoid a deer.

Anthony Dale Johnson, 37, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:57 p.m. Wednesday to a crash at the intersection of West County Road 700 South and South County Road 575 West in southwestern Johnson County. An SUV had driven through a fence into a nearby home on the 5000 block of W. County Road 700 South, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Johnson, who was the driver of the vehicle, told deputies he was traveling on County Road 700 South when a deer ran in front of him, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. He also admitted to drinking four beers and smoking marijuana, the report shows.

Deputies say total damage in the crash is estimated between $50,001 to $100,000. This includes damage to the house and the front yard fence.

As of Thursday morning, Johnson was being held at the Johnson County jail on a $1,000 bond.
