Fire damages Needham house, injures firefighter

A local firefighter was injured while fighting a fire that broke out in the attic of a house in Needham Sunday evening.

No one was inside the home on Watson Road at the time of the fire just after 6 p.m., the Needham Community Fire Department posted on its Facebook page.

The Greenwood Fire Department was first to respond, followed by Needham, Fairland, Whiteland, Amity, Nineveh, Bargersville and Trafalgar fire departments. The fire started in the back attic of the two-story house, and was brought under control in around 30 minutes, Needham Fire Chief Jason Cahill said.

One Needham firefighter had a small fall while working on the roof at the scene. He sustained minor injuries, and went to the hospital out of an abundance of caution, Cahill said. He was released that evening and was home recovering on Monday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Cahill said it was not suspected to be suspicious in nature.

Damage was mostly contained to the attic, with some water damage spreading down to the second floor, he said.
