GCA seeking new superintendent

School leaders have chosen not to renew the contract of Greenwood Christian Academy’s superintendent.

GCA’s school board hired Mike Chitty to take over the superintendent role in 2019. His contract will expire at the end of the month, according to an email school leaders sent to parents Friday.

“As you are aware, GCA’s mission is to pursue academic, spiritual and extra-curricular excellence in a Christ-centered community,” the email said. “It is with this pursuit at the forefront, and with prayerful consideration, that the board has decided not to renew Mike Chitty’s contract for the 2023-24 school year.”

School board president Jared Adams said he couldn’t disclose more specific reasons for Chitty’s dismissal. Secondary principal Angelique Randall and high school dean Kevin Jackson will co-lead the academy during the 2023-24 school year, with Randall serving as executive director of instruction and Jackson transitioning to a new role as executive director of spiritual formation and operations, Adams said.

“They are two leaders at the school who have a combined 24 years of GCA experience,” Adams said. “The board felt they, in combination with their teams, could help the school thrive.”

The board will start the search for a permanent superintendent later this year. School leaders are thankful for Chitty’s leadership during the COVID pandemic and as the school expanded to two buildings in 2021, Adams said, a sentiment that was echoed in the email to parents.

“Mike arrived at GCA during a time of significant financial stress for the school and quickly found himself navigating a global pandemic which created unprecedented growth,” the email said. “The board is grateful for his leadership through these challenging times and wishes him and his family the best in their endeavors.”

The academy opened in 1998 and grew to about 500 students during the 2020-21 school year. During Chitty’s tenure, the high school program moved into the former building of The Gathering Place at 1495 W. Main Street in time for the 2021-22 school year. Preschool through eighth-grade offerings remained at the school’s original building at 835 W. Worthsville Road.

Including his four years leading GCA, Mike Chitty has more than 30 years of experience in Christian education. The Greenwood position was his first in Indiana, as he previously held jobs in Ohio and Illinois. Before Chitty’s arrival, GCA didn’t have a superintendent for two years, with school leaders instead relying on a consulting firm to lead the academy.
