GREENWOOD, INDIANA
Robert Lee Shipley, known to many as “Preacher Bob,” resident of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 86. He was a graduate of Madison High School in 1955. Robert was a longtime member of the Indianapolis Baptist Temple. He was an avid golfer from a young age. He loved fishing, shooting pool, and horseshoes. He was an electrician by trade for Western Electric. He and his wife, Barbara, of 53 years, ran a grocery store in Madison, Indiana. Robert was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed selling anything he could from jewelry to Christmas trees. He and Barbara then settled into their small engine repair shop for many years.
Robert is survived by his children, Collette (Paul) Chatterton of Martinsville, IN, Cynthia (Kevin) Mongan of Greenwood, IN, and Beth (Myron) Davis of Greenwood, IN; grandchildren, Ryan (Keighley) Chatterton of Greenwood, IN, Jacob (Amber) Despot of Star City, IN, Abigail Mongan of Greenwood, IN, Melissa Davis of Indianapolis, IN, Vanessa (Brandon) Cockrell of Tarzana, CA, and Ross Davis of Indianapolis, IN; great-grandchildren, Brady Chatterton, Lucy Chatterton, Krista Despot, Elli Despot, and Whitley Despot; many nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Shipley; grandchildren, Jennifer Chatterton, Carson Despot, and Sara Despot; parents, Harry and Stella Shipley; sister, Phyllis Schreiber.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at Suburban Baptist Church, located at 722 E. County Line Road, Indianapolis, IN 46227, with service to follow at 3:00pm. Robert will be laid to rest at Mt. Pleasant Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood, Indiana.
