White River tornado: How to make storm damage reports, clean up debris

Clean-up and recovery continues in White River Township after Sunday’s tornado.

Here’s some information about debris cleanup, damage reporting and how to help:

Report damage to Indiana 211

Residents of Johnson, Monroe and Orange counties are asked to contact Indiana 211 to report damage from Sunday’s tornadoes.

To help establish a comprehensive assessment of damages, residents can call 211 or visit the Indiana 211 website. Collecting assessments via this process will help IDHS determine damage estimates and develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process.

Currently, only residents in Johnson, Monroe and Orange counties should call Indiana 211 for damage reports. Other counties should reach out to their local emergency manager.

Residents can register at in211.communityos.org and then follow the Damage Reporting tab at the top of the web page to request assistance through this portal. Johnson County residents can also contact the Johnson County Emergency Management directly at 317-346-4655.

Agricultural damage should be reported to the Purdue Extension.

Johnson County debris cleanup

The Johnson County government will be providing curbside pick up of woody debris which includes trees, shrubs and bushes, starting over the next few days.

Residents are instructed to place woody debris by their curb or at the edge of the road, but not in the roadway. This woody debris must be separated from general construction and non-woody debris in order for it to be picked up, according to a news release from the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency.

Affected residents do not need to register online for curbside pickup of woody debris. The county will not enter private property to remove debris.

The county will also provide dumpsters over the next few days which will be placed in neighborhoods affected by the storms.

Citizens are responsible for taking the general construction and non-woody debris to those dumpsters. Johnson County will not pick up this type of debris from the curb. Woody debris will not be allowed in the dumpsters. Specific locations of the dumpsters will be provided at a later time, the release says.

Electronics are not allowed to be placed in the dumpsters. Residents should contact Johnson County Recycling District at 317-738-2546 regarding electronics.

Donation collections

The White River Township Trustee’s office at 2929 S. Morgantown Road, Greenwood is collecting water and personal hygiene item donations.

Anyone who wishes to donate these items can drop them off at the office any day during the week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These items can be picked up by any residents affected by the tornado during this time as well.

Mount Pleasant Christian Church is organizing efforts with the Red Cross and Johnson County Emergency Services to become a drop-off location for recovery items. More details about this are expected to come later.

Affected families can contact the church directly now to see what they have available for food, clothing and household items. They can call the church at 317-881-6727 or fill out a form for disaster help online at mpcc.info/disasterresponse.
