Another major step forward occurred over the weekend as Interstate 69 Finish Line crews continued work on Interstate 465 on Indianapolis’s southwest side.
Road crews successfully closed westbound I-465 between Interstate 65 and Interstate 70 to complete work related to added capacity, perform road surface upgrades and improve utilities and drainage, according to a weekly update from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
During the closure westbound I-465 and the following ramps will be closed to traffic:
- I-65 to I-465 westbound;
- U.S. 31/East Street to I-465 westbound;
- Harding Street/State Road 37 to I-465 westbound;
- Kentucky Avenue/State Road 67 to I-465 westbound.
The official detour follows northbound I-65 to westbound I-70 at the South Split. INDOT encourages motorists to plan for extra travel time and seek alternate routes when possible or check out 511.org before heading out the door and see what the commute looks like.
In Indianapolis this week, there will also be an intermittent left lane closure on eastbound I-465 expected near U.S. 31 during the westbound I-465 closure. This will give room for crews to safely move in and out of the work zone. During the westbound closure, crews will also begin installing sound barriers near the Kentucky Avenue exit ramp, INDOT officials say.
Further south, a long-term closure of Belmont Avenue is expected late this week to begin building the new Belmont Avenue access under future I-69.
In Johnson County, crews expect to switch the northbound lanes of State Road 37 between Banta Road and Smith Valley Road onto new pavement later this week.
People should also watch for crews working on the shoulders of I-69 and State Road 37 as they continue to install right-of-way fencing along the corridor, INDOT officials say.
