Community Hospital South to host fall health fair Saturday

This weekend, local residents can enjoy a cornucopia of health care information during a new fall-themed event.

Community Hospital South will host its inaugural Fall Health and Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the hospital’s front parking lot. People can learn about the different offerings at Community, from cancer care to heart screenings to protecting yourself with a free flu vaccine, or get your blood pressure checked by Community hospital staff.

Kids can get their faces painted, take part in a variety of activities and enjoy a snack.

The idea behind the event is to get people thinking about their health, and helping understand the types of care they can get at Community Hospital South.

“It’s important to let people know that they have a place to go — if they have questions, if they’re seeking information, that we’re more than just a site to provide care, but we’re also a source of information about a specific health illness they’re having,” said Pam Stirling, vice president of operations at Community Hospital South. “It’s really important to develop those relationships with the community so we can build trust and let them know we’re here to support them.”

The health fair coincides with the nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative, which seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through proper disposal of prescription drugs. People will be able to safely bring their unused or expired medication to the event for proper and responsible disposal.

“We partner with the police department to let people with expired medications or medications they’re no longer taking, whether it’s over-the counter or prescription, to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of those properly,” Stirling said.

Booths and tables set up throughout the health fair will touch on a variety of different subjects and services available at Community Hospital South. People can find information from a diabetes educator, or talk to experts on strokes and chest pain to learn about the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular issues.

Community will also provide information on its medication assistance program, which allows the hospital to partner with patients to help them secure medicine.

“I feel like a lot of times people don’t know the services we offer here at South, so it would be a good time to educate people, provide education on the different types of services we do. I know a lot of people come here for service, but maybe they’re not familiar with everything we offer,” Stirling said.

With the hospital having entered into a partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center, the health fair will also allow Community to provide insight on the treatments and care now available to cancer patients.

People can also find potential employment opportunities at Community Hospital South.

“We’ll have a recruitment table set up, with regards to the types of positions we have available here,” Stirling said. “Some leaders will also be here if people have questions about a certain position or a certain field they’re interested in.”
