Applications open for Indiana STEM scholarship

Indiana officials are inviting high school students to apply for the 2024 Governor’s STEM Team for the chance to win a $1,000 scholarship.

Gov. Eric Holcomb developed the competition in 2017 to highlight the state’s top high school students for their achievements in science, technology, engineering and math — frequently referred to as STEM. Holcomb, Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner and Treasurer of State Daniel Elliott are encouraging students to apply, according to an Indiana Department of Education news release.

Officials say the program honors four high school students for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments in one of the STEM disciplines. Coursework, extracurricular activities, work/research projects, leadership roles and community service will also be considered for the honors.

Winning students each receive a $1,000 deposit into an Indiana CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings plan, administered by the state treasurer. They also receive letterman jackets identifying them as members of the Governor’s STEM Team, according to the news release.

The submission period for the program is open now, and the deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. Feb. 16. Applications can be submitted at form.jotform.com/240174023254950. Former recipients are not eligible to apply for this year’s program, officials say.

Winners will be announced at an Indiana Statehouse ceremony in early May. Those with questions about the application should IDOE’s Office of Teaching and Learning at [email protected].
