College notebook: Rees off to fast start for UIndy softball

Senior catcher Lexy Rees totaled four hits, including two home runs, while driving in five runs and stealing two bases as the University of Indianapolis softball team opened its season winning three of four games against Mercyhurst. Teammate Dominique Proctor, also a Greenwood graduate, had three hits and scored four runs overall.

Greenwood

Franklin College senior Mallory Watson placed fourth in the mile run (5:29.59) as the Grizzlies’ women’s track and field squad competed at the DePauw Indoor Invitational.

UIndy sophomore Dylan Mayhew finished second in the shot put with a best of 52-2 at the MU Indoor Invite at Marian. He also took fourth in the weighted throw with a distance of 55-5.

Center Gavin Dowling helped Anderson win at Bluffton, 93-87, with his 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. In a 94-75 victory at Hanover, Dowling had two points, three boards and a blocked shot.

Center Grove

Vermont graduate student Emma Utterback scored 18 points and grabbed two rebounds in her team’s 69-45 victory over visiting UMBC.

Senior guard Claire Rake provided 12 points for Truman State in its 79-72 win at UIndy.

Bentley guard Ella Thompson had 13 points, two rebounds and three assists in a 66-47 loss at Assumption.

Freshman guard Marcus Ankney finished with eight points and three assists for Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball in its 82-77 victory at St. Francis. He had seven points, two assists and a steal in a 99-61 romp over Taylor.

Indiana freshman Garrett Messer threw the shot put 41 feet, 1¼ inches to place 15th at the Windy City Invitational indoor track and field meet.

Senior sprinter Kiyah Yeast placed fourth in the 200-meter dash for Louisville in a time of 23.73 — the fifth-fastest time in school history — at the Cap Boston Split indoor track and field meet. Yeast was also part of the 4×100 relay that was timed in 3:42.07.

Kentucky freshman Shelby Wingler took 20th in the weighted throw at Clemson’s Tiger Paw Invite with a distance of 53-11.

Ball State sophomore swimmer Ben Clarkston competed on the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay and fourth-place 200 medley relay in the team’s loss at Southern Illinois. Clarkston was also fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:45.14) and seventh in the 100 free (47.78).

Junior Ashlee Fisk won at No. 1 singles in three sets and was part of the victorious No. 2 doubles duo as Northern Kentucky women’s tennis downed Lindenwood, 5-2.

Franklin

Marian freshman Brooke Coffman finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles and eighth in the high jump as the Knights hosted an indoor track and field meet.

Freshman guard Kyndell Jochim had five points and two rebounds for Huntington women’s basketball in a 76-44 loss at Marian. In the team’s 78-67 win over Grace College, Jochim scored 10 points and grabbed two rebounds.

Franklin College freshman Dylan Beverly had six points, three rebounds and two assists in a 75-74 loss at Earlham.

Radford women’s basketball lost at Presbyterian, 57-50, with sophomore guard Ashlyn Traylor-Walker totaling 13 points, two rebounds and a steal. In a 54-51 loss at Winthrop, she had six points, eight rebounds and two steals.

Drew McGaha and Eli Cochrane were part of Franklin College’s victorious 4×400 relay in 3:31.68 at the DePauw indoor track and field invitational.

Ball State men’s swimming lost at Southern Illinois, 181-118, though junior Ethan Pheifer did his part for the Cardinals by taking part in the second-place 200 medley relay (1:30.50), placing fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.75), sixth in the 200 backstroke (1:59.08) and second in the 200 IM (1:53.44).

Whiteland

Lipscomb sophomore Bella Jackson finished third in the high jump at the Music City Challenge with a top effort of 5-9¼. Her time of 9.15 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles secured a 26th-place finish.

Ball State freshman Brooklyn Taylor’s best shot put distance of 40-8½ was good for 16th place during an indoor track and field meet at Grand Valley State. She was 30th in the weighted throw with a best distance of 40-3½.

Junior guard Logan Willoughby poured in 24 points to go along with his three assists and two steals as Manchester men’s basketball won at Transylvania, 91-83. Freshman Austin Willoughby had three points, two rebounds and a blocked shot. In a 91-61 defeat of visiting Defiance, Logan had 13 points, 10 boards and four assists while Austin had four points and two rebounds.

Indian Creek

Graduate student Dustin Sprong picked up the win for The Cumberlands baseball squad in a 13-2 win at Milligan, allowing four hits and striking out five in his four frames of work.

Marian’s Luci Woodrum finished 12th in the mile run as the Knights hosted an indoor track and field meet.

Freshman guard Abby Fleetwood scored seven points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists as Spring Arbor defeated Taylor in women’s hoops, 84-68.

Greenwood Christian

Junior guard Izzy Reed had five points and a rebound for Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball in an 81-73 victory at St. Francis. She finished with 11 points and three rebounds in the Wildcats’ 99-76 win over Taylor.

Manchester freshman Blake Shewmaker scored seven points and grabbed three boards in the men’s squad’s 91-83 triumph at Transylvania. He had five points and two rebounds in the team’s 91-61 victory over Defiance.

Roncalli

Florida freshman pitcher Keagan Rothrock (Whiteland) picked up the save in the Gators’ season opener, a 1-0 victory over Oregon State. She took the loss in a 2-1 extra-innings defeat against Michigan, working all 10 frames and allowing one hit, walking three and recording three strikeouts. Rothrock picked up her first college win in a 12-3 defeat of South Florida, fanning seven batters in her seven innings.
