GCA boys basketball cruises into sectional semis

Greenwood Christian managed to produce a pair of victories on Wednesday.

The Cougars handily defeated Providence Cristo Rey in first-round action, 61-12, allowing GCA coach Jackson Williams to clear his bench early and often at the Class A Indianapolis Lutheran sectional.

“It was good to get us out there, and see everybody’s ability to follow a scouting report,” Williams said. “They did pretty well. The kids were focused, and our bench had a lot of energy.”

Greenwood Christian (15-7) cruised to a 45-4 lead by halftime.

Senior guard Max Booher led the Cougars with 20 points and three rebounds. Freshman forward Will Simons added nine points and four boards, while junior guard Alieu Ceesay and senior post Reid Smith tallied eight and six points, respectively.

Since 2018, GCA ball clubs have played five sectional games against the Wolves, winning four. Providence Cristo Rey finishes its season with a 1-21 record.

GCA returns to Lutheran on Friday to play Central Christian in a 7:30 semifinal.

A victory puts the Cougars in Saturday night’s title game against the winner of Friday’s much-anticipated 6 p.m. semi between 10th-ranked Tindley (16-8) and the host Saints (14-8), the defending Class A state champion.

Williams isn’t concerned that his team will be looking ahead.

“We’re just really focused on Friday’s game,” he said. “We have a group of guys who have been around a while and know what they have to do.”
