College notebook: Cerny helps IU baseball win series at Purdue

Indiana baseball won two of three games at rival Purdue, a series that included sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny, a Center Grove graduate, contributing four hits for the Hoosiers, including a pair of doubles.

Center Grove

Franklin College catcher Adam Taylor doubled and singled twice in a 9-4 loss to Bluffton. He had two hits in a 4-3 win at Anderson, a game that also saw Grizzlies pitcher Jackson Young strike out 11 while pitching a complete-game six-hitter.

Freshman Garrison Barile singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Miami of Ohio in a 9-8 victory at Kent State.

Senior pitcher Drue Young started for Indiana Wesleyan in its 9-7 loss to St. Francis at the Crossroads League tournament, allowing five hits in six innings and striking out four.

Indiana University-Kokomo pitcher Asa Christie got the win in an 11-9 defeat of Oakland City, working one inning of relief. He also struck out three batters in a relief inning during an 11-8 decision over Point Park.

Missouri freshman shortstop Drew Culbertson doubled in a 10-2 loss to South Carolina. He singled twice and drove in three runs in the Tigers’ 8-3 win in the second game of the series.

Alabama third baseman Bryce Eblin singled and scored a run in a 13-3 loss at Mississippi State. The senior then hit a two-run homer in a 10-5 victory.

Southern Indiana first baseman Lexi Fair provided her team five hits, including two doubles and a home run, as the team won two of three games at Western Illinois.

Senior third baseman Kaci Finchum singled three times as Mount St. Joseph won at Defiance, 9-3. She also singled in the second game of the doubleheader, a 9-6 loss.

Louisville senior Kyiah Yeast won the 100-meter dash at the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana, running a time of 11.85 seconds, and also won the 200 in 23.77 seconds. Indiana State freshman Parker Doyle clocked a personal-best time of 55.29 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.

Marian men’s golfer Brandon Heffner tied for the runner-up spot individually with a three-round score of 207 at the Crossroads League Championship, where the Knights placed won the tournament for a second consecutive year.

Franklin

Franklin College freshman Ailyn Hendricks was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis first team.

University of Indianapolis sophomore golfer Ava Ray shot scores of 72 and 74 as the Greyhounds finished second at the NCAA Division II East Regional.

Greenwood

Franklin College senior tennis player Maecee Terhune was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference second team.

University of Indianapolis softball won three of four games at the GLVC tournament, where senior catcher Lexy Rees singled and homered in a 3-2 loss to Missouri S&T.

Sophomore outfielder Anna Pritchett scored a run for Marian in its 9-5 loss to Indiana Wesleyan at the Crossroads League tournament.

UIndy junior Emily Bonser won the discus at the Great Lakes Valley Conference track and field meet with a personal-best toss of 150 feet, 10 inches. Greyhound sophomore Dylan Mayhew was third in the men’s shot put.

Whiteland

Franklin College senior golfer Zach Ricketts tied for 24th place at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, finishing with a three-round total of 237.

Morehead State senior pitcher Luke Helton upped his season record to 7-2, leading the Eagles to a 13-9 defeat of visiting UT Martin. In 6 1/3 innings, he allowed 11 hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Mount St. Joseph junior leftfielder Macy Cornelius singled, doubled and stole a base in a 9-3 victory at Defiance. She doubled in the second game of the doubleheader, a 9-6 loss.

Sophomore Debbie Hill singled, doubled and homered for Trine in its 12-0 win over Albion. She swatted another round-tripper in an 8-0 victory, this time picking up the pitching win with two hits allowed over four innings.

Indian Creek

Franklin College sophomore Braxton Christie was named all-conference after tying for seventh at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s golf tournament, shooting a three-round total of 221.
