GCA boys basketball rolls into sectional title game

Greenwood Christian will need to overcome a stiff challenge if it’s going to win a sectional championship tonight. Its road to the title game hasn’t been quite so tough.

The Cougars cruised to their second victory in three nights, riding 18 points from senior Max Booher to an easy 58-21 win over Central Christian in the semifinal round of the Class A Indianapolis Lutheran Sectional on Friday evening.

GCA (16-7) will play in tonight’s final against the host Saints, a 68-41 victor over No. 10 Tindley in the other semifinal.

“The kids came out and executed the game plan defensively and really did a good job of getting the ball to the rim,” Greenwood Christian coach Jackson Williams said of his team’s effort as it cruised to a 37-15 halftime advantage.

Reed Smith and Jordan Taulman added nine points apiece for the Cougars, while Alieu Ceesay and Eli Jackson each scored six.

Though GCA has won its first two postseason games by a combined 86 points, Williams knows tonight’s game will be considerably tougher. The Cougars edged the Saints, 55-47, back on Dec. 9, but both teams look different nearly three months later.

“We’re going to have to really bring our minds to it and really focus in,” Williams said. “Lutheran’s a team that gets better throughout the year every single year. … We felt like we were going to see what we saw tonight with them.”
