College notebook: Utterback helps Vermont into conference title game

Vermont advanced to the championship game of the America East Conference tournament in women’s basketball by defeating Albany, 50-46. Guard Emma Utterback, a Center Grove graduate, scored 12 points, collected four rebounds and had two assists for the Catamounts, who played in Friday night’s game at top-seeded Maine.

Center Grove

Guard Ella Thomson scored nine points, passed out three assists and grabbed two rebounds as Bentley women’s basketball won its conference tournament with a 64-49 victory over Southern Connecticut State.

Franklin College catcher Adam Taylor completed the team’s three-game series against Albion with three hits, including a double, and two runs scored. Teammate Jackson Young pitched a complete game in the Grizzlies’ 15-3 victory, scattering seven hits and striking out seven over seven innings. Taylor had a hit and scored two runs in FC’s 20-7 win over Wilmington (Ohio).

Indiana Wesleyan baseball player Drue Young was named the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week after he tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine batters in a 7-0 defeat of Marian.

Second baseman Bryce Eblin singled three times and scored two runs as Alabama downed Lipscomb, 10-1.

Sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny had three hits, drove in two runs and stole a base in Indiana’s 10-7 baseball win over Troy. Cerny hit a double for the Hoosiers in the second game of the doubleheader, a 15-11 loss.

Miami of Ohio right fielder Garrison Barile scored two runs in a 17-16 loss to Bowling Green.

Southern Indiana senior first baseman Lexi Fair singled, scored and drove in a run in a 6-3 softball win over Tennessee Tech.

Senior third baseman Kaci Finchum had two hits and a stolen base in Mount St. Joseph’s 8-2 victory over Carroll (Wisconsin), and three hits and three runs driven in a 9-4 defeat of Messiah.

St. Leo golfer Alex Heck fired a three-round score of 223 as his team placed 13th at the First Federal Southeastern Challenge.

Noah Gillard tied for 23rd individually with scores of 75, 76 and 71 as Indiana men’s golf tied for fourth at the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Whiteland

Aquinas College freshman Amelia Edens tied her own school record in the 200-yard backstroke at the NAIA swimming and diving nationals, her time of 2:07.30 placing her 14th overall.

Franklin College sophomore Brenna Atchison won at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles to help the women’s tennis team defeat Kentucky Wesleyan, 4-3.

Junior left fielder Macy Cornelius singled and drove in two runs for Mount St. Joseph in its 8-2 triumph over Carroll (Wisconsin).

Greenwood

Indiana advanced six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, including graduate student Nick Willham, the team’s 285-pounder. It will be Willham’s first time competing at nationals, scheduled for March 21-23 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Maecee Terhune won her matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles as Franklin College women’s tennis defeated Kentucky Wesleyan, 4-3.

The University of Indianapolis softball squad won its first four games at The Spring Games by a total of 46-1. Senior shortstop Dominique Proctor had two hits and drove in two runs in the series, while senior catcher Lexy Rees singled, homered and drove in five runs in the fourth outing, a 10-0 triumph over Lake Erie.

Sophomore outfielder Anna Pritchett singled and scored a run for Marian softball in an 11-0 shutout of Mount Mercy.

Franklin

Manchester University women’s swimmer Alexis Ferguson was one of six Spartan athletes named to the HCAC winter sportsmanship team.

Golfer Ellie Beavins helped Taylor win the nine-team Baker Shootout, carding scores of 84 and 83 to tie for the fifth spot individually.

Damon Dickey tied for sixth individually, carding scores of 72, 70 and 66, as Butler men’s golf finished fourth out of 18 teams at the App State Surf Club Invitational.

Freshman Ailyn Hendricks won matches at No. 1 doubles and the top singles spot to help the Franklin College women’s tennis squad down Kentucky Wesleyan, 4-3.

Roncalli

Florida softball won at Alabama, 2-0, behind the one-hitter thrown by freshman Keagan Rothrock (Whiteland), who walked three and striking out three over seven innings. Rothrock took the loss in a 3-0 setback against the Crimson Tide, allowing eight hits and striking out five in her six innings.
