College notebook: Greenwood grad Rees earns GLVC honors

University of Indianapolis catcher Lexy Rees was named Great Lakes Valley Conference softball player of the week after producing five hits and driving in a total of 10 runs in four games. The former Greenwood standout has won conference player of the week honors three times in her career.

Greenwood

Junior Emily Bonser had three top-five finishes for UIndy women’s track and field at the Marian University Open, taking second in the hammer throw and fourth in both the shot put and discus. On the men’s side, sophomore Dylan Mayhew was third in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot put.

Center Grove

Vermont women’s basketball player Emma Utterback scored 12 points, two assists and two blocked shots as the Catamounts downed Colgate, 65-55, in the Women’s NIT. Utterback had a game-high 20 points and six assists in the team’s 67-59 win at Purdue in the tourney quarterfinals, and finished her career with 10 points and four assists in a 57-54 semifinal loss to St. Louis.

Sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny completed the series with six hits, including two home runs and a double, as well as four runs and eight RBIs as Indiana University baseball won two of four games against visiting Butler. Cerny erupted for four hits, including another homer, scored four runs and drove in four in IU’s 16-7 win over Indiana State.

Redshirt freshman shortstop Sam Griffith scored a run for Oakland baseball in its 5-4 loss at Wright State.

IU Kokomo sophomore pitcher Asa Christie worked 1 1/3 innings of middle relief, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout, in the team’s 8-3 triumph over IUPUC.

Freshman shortstop Drew Culbertson delivered a pair of singles for Missouri in its 13-3 home victory over UT Martin.

St. Leo senior Alex Heck was the individual champion with a 10-under-par score of 203 over his three rounds at the Battle at the Shores, helping his team place second out of 16.

IU freshman Garrett Messer established a new personal best in the long jump of 20 feet, 7¾ inches to finish 22nd at the Battle on the Bayou at LSU. He was also 14th in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.13 seconds.

Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Drue Young went the first six innings in a 4-1 loss at Bethel, scattering eight hits and striking out three.

Franklin College baseball won two of three games at Manchester, with senior catcher Adam Taylor singling and driving in a run in the opener, an 8-5 Grizzlies’ win. Senior pitcher Jackson Young took the loss in FC’s 14-4 loss.

Kaci Finchum had a double for Mount St. Joseph in a 5-4 loss at Franklin College and another in a 4-3 loss to the Grizzlies.

Whiteland

Trine sophomore Debbie Hill pitched a complete game in a 10-3 win over Hiram, allowing four hits and striking out eight. At the plate, she singled twice and drove in a run.

Damon Dickey carded a pair of 70s to tie for the 16th spot individually as Butler men’s golf hosted its spring invitational.

Sophomore Ava Ray shot scores of 70, 77 and 74 to finish tied for fifth as the University of Indianapolis women’s golf squad co-hosted the Findianapolis Intercollegiate.

Marian University freshman Brooke Coffman finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the high jump as the Knights opened their outdoor track and field season with a home meet.

Indian Creek

Marian runner Luci Woodrum finished fifth in the 5,000-meter race as the Knights hosted their first meet of the outdoor track and field season.

Dustin Sprong pitched two innings of relief, striking out five, to help the University of the Cumberlands defeat Lindsey Wilson, 4-1.

Franklin College senior Dylan Sprong pitched the win in the baseball team’s 16-7 victory at Manchester, allowing six hits and striking out two in four innings.

RONCALLI

Freshman pitcher Keagan Rothrock (Whiteland) picked up the win by allowing six hits and two runs in her 5 2/3 innings as Florida softball won at Mississippi State, 7-6.
