Editor’s note: Print deadline changes to impact live sports coverage

For years, you’ve counted on the Daily Journal to provide blanket coverage of Johnson County sports.

You can expect that to continue. It just might look a little different going forward.

With Gannett closing its Indianapolis printing press, AIM Media Indiana is shifting its print operations to our press based at our sister newspaper, the (Greenfield) Daily Reporter. That change will cause the Daily Journal’s print deadlines to move up by a couple of hours from now on, with our last pages — usually sports — due to the press by 9 p.m.

That change means some of the live coverage that you’re accustomed to getting in the next day’s paper won’t make it in; Tuesday night basketball games won’t be in Wednesday’s print edition, and Friday night football games won’t appear in the paper on Saturday mornings.

While this change might not seem ideal, we’re viewing it as an opportunity. For a typical game story in the past, we’ve often had to rush to make deadlines (especially for football), which means we don’t have nearly as much time as we’d like to conduct postgame interviews or dig much beyond the surface of what happened on the field. With a little more time to operate, we’ll be able to go further beyond the play-by-play and provide not only a more thorough look at the biggest moments in the biggest local games, but what those moments mean in the big picture of an entire season.

We highly encourage you to use dailyjournal.net to get your local sports news in real time. For those of you who will continue to rely on our print product for information, fear not — you’ll still get the most comprehensive coverage of Johnson County sports.

Some things may be changing, but that will not.
