Softball

Trojans split with Kingsmen

Class 4A No. 7 Center Grove went an extra inning to earn a 9-8 victory over second-ranked Penn on Saturday before suffering an 18-9 setback in the nightcap. Brynn Meyer had a five-hit day for the Trojans (6-4), while Riley Janda and Brooklyn Groppel had three RBIs apiece.

Grizzly Cubs sweep twinbill

Franklin took both halves of its Saturday doubleheader against Perry Meridian, winning by scores of 11-3 and 20-6. Addie Mashino and Bryleigh Carlisle-Haltom both homered in the nightcap for the Grizzly Cubs (4-3, 2-2 Mid-State).

Warriors take one of two

Whiteland rolled to a 15-3 victory over North Central on Saturday but took a 10-1 loss against Fishers. Gracee Whitaker and winning pitcher Kiley Sullivan each drove in three runs for the Warriors (3-5) during the win over the Panthers.

Host Center Grove takes win

Sixth-ranked Center Grove won its Trojan Classic on Saturday at Hickory Stick, totaling a 297 to beat No. 2 Guerin Catholic by four strokes. Drew Hardin shot a 71 for the Trojans to place second on the individual leaderboard, followed closely by Nathan Springer (74), Noah Parsetich (75) and Brody Holubar (77). Greenwood Christian’s Noah Reed tied for third individually with a 72, while teammate Finn Satre carded a 76. Carson Poe finished with a 77 for Center Grove’s White team, which placed third at 311.

Girls tennis

Braves earn two victories

Indian Creek swept a pair of Western Indiana Conference matches on Saturday, beating Northview and West Vigo by 5-0 scores. Lauren Foster, Reese Tunell and Lilly Swanson won two singles points apiece for the Braves (2-1, 2-1), who also got perfect days from the doubles teams of Lanie Swanson and Lexi Sichting (No. 1) and Alaina Perry and Eliza Thorpe (No. 2).

Whiteland edged by Orioles

Whiteland’s quest for its first win fell just short in a 3-2 loss against Avon Saturday. Candace Stephenson was a three-set winner at first singles for the Warriors (0-5), while Taylor Darnell and Alexa Lee also went a third set to pull out a victory at second doubles.

Softball keeps on rolling

Franklin College ran its win streak to 10 games over the weekend, posting 4-2 and 9-4 victories over Defiance on Saturday and beating Hanover 8-4 and 8-7 on Sunday. Kendall Lowry and Ruth Kaiser each drove in two runs in the first game against the Yellow Jackets, while Molly Wallace had three RBIs in Saturday’s nightcap for the Grizzlies (19-5, 8-0 HCAC). Sunday’s hero was Eriana Wagner, who went 4 for 4 with two home runs in the opener and finished off game two with a walkoff RBI single.

Baseball tames Lions

Garrett DeHart’s four RBIs helped power Franklin College to a 14-7 triumph over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday in the series opener between the two HCAC rivals. Tysen Lipscomb and Luke Willman both hit home runs for the Grizzlies (14-12, 5-8), who got swept by Mount St. Joseph on Sunday by scores of 13-6 and 15-12.

Track and field competes at D3 meet

Franklin College took part in the Indiana Division III Championships on Saturday at DePauw, with the women placing sixth and the men seventh. Logan McIntosh was the Grizzlies’ lone event winner, taking first in the men’s javelin, while the men also got runner-up efforts from the 4×400 relay team and from Max Malone in the discus. For the women, Alison Muck was second in the 100 hurdles and third in the high jump.

Women’s golf plays in Illinois

Franklin College placed 21st in the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling at Illinois Wesleyan. Sarah Cooper paced the Grizzlies with a two-round total of 178.
