Warriors win sectional opener

Whiteland got its postseason started on Wednesday evening with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Martinsville in the opening round of the Franklin Sectional. The Warriors (18-12) will meet the host Grizzly Cubs in a semifinal match on Saturday morning.

Girls tennis

Braves defeat Lancers

Indian Creek picked up a 4-1 victory over Edinburgh on Wednesday. Lilly Swanson and Gracie Werden were winners at second and third singles for the Braves, who also got points from Lanie Swanson and Lexi Sichting at No. 1 doubles and the team of Rhiannon Cravens and Eliza Tharpe at No. 2 doubles. The Lancers’ lone point came at first singles, where Jessica Walsh was victorious in straight sets.

Woodmen squeak past Artesians

Jahlen Burton and Davis Arthur each carded a 39 to help Greenwood pull out a narrow 162-164 win over Martinsville at Valle Vista on Wednesday. Kalen Rowland and Barden Chase each shot 42 for the Woodmen, who posted their lowest team score of the spring.

Softball

Whiteland sweeps Falcons

Kiley Sullivan (three doubles), Jordyn Crouch and Aubrey Felker each drove in three runs as Whiteland posted victories of 4-3 and 10-2 against Perry Meridian. The Warriors improved to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in the Mid-State with the sweep.

Baseball

Lancers come up short

Avynn Whitaker had a home run and two RBIs, but host Edinburgh still wound up on the wrong end of a 7-3 score against Jac-Cen-Del on Wednesday. Whitaker also pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Lancers (10-9-1).
