College notebook: Shepherd posts low score for IU at conference golf tourney

Indiana men’s golf placed sixth in the Big Ten tournament at Crooked Stick in Carmel, led by Ethan Shepherd’s ninth-place finish individually. Shepherd, a senior and Center Grove graduate, carded a 7-over-par total of 223.

Shepherd, who earned second team all-conference honors, leads the Hoosiers into NCAA regional play May 17-19.

Center Grove

Grace College golfer Lucy Young helped her team place fifth in the Crossroads League Championships in Benton Harbor, Michigan, with a three-round score of 245.

Findlay women’s soccer player Kelti Wise has been named Defensive Player of the Week by the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. A freshman goalkeeper, Wise helped the Oilers win the league title with four and two saves in the semifinal and championship matches, respectively.

Pitcher Jackson Young picked up the win for Franklin College baseball with two innings of one-hit relief in a 9-8 victory over Earlham. Young also notched a save in his squad’s 8-6 defeat of Bluffton.

Butler sophomore A.J. Poynter had two singles and drove in a run in the baseball team’s 6-4 loss to Northern Kentucky. Poynter drove in a run as the Bulldogs responded with a 3-0 triumph in the second half of the doubleheader.

The University of Indianapolis baseball won two of four games at Southern Indiana, with senior Will Smithey picking up a total of two hits, driving in a run and scoring one.

Freshman Grant Herron pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for Morehead State baseball in a 13-3 loss to Murray State. Herron allowed four hits and struck out two.

Northwestern softball split a four-game series against Illinois as junior catcher Jordyn Rudd contributed a double and scored a run.

Franklin

Earlham catcher Nathaniel Whetstine singled and drove in two runs in the team’s 9-8 loss to Franklin College.

Franklin College runner Drew Hargis took 10th in the 1,500-meter run, posting a time of 4:20.40, at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference track and field meet in Terre Haute.

DePauw tennis player Noah Roberts won matches at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles as the Tigers defeated Wittenberg, 8-1.

Whiteland

Franklin College freshman Zach Ricketts finished 24th individually as the Grizzlies placed fifth at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet in Bluffton, Ohio.

Earlham pitcher Nick Carrizales got the start against Franklin College in a 9-8 loss, going six innings, allowing six hits and striking out six. For the Grizzlies, Tyler Wick pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Luke Helton pitched the first five innings of Morehead State’s 5-3 win over Murray State in baseball, giving up six hits, two runs and striking out three.

Anderson University senior Branton Sanders delivered two hits and scored six runs in a sweep of Defiance in baseball. The Ravens then split a doubleheader at Manchester with Sanders singling twice, belting a home run and driving in four runs in a 14-6 victory.

Danielle Munn picked up the save for Indiana Wesleyan softball in its 5-2 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene in the Crossroads League tournament. The senior pitched the final inning, surrendering one hit.

Indian Creek

Senior Hunter Fields helped the Franklin College women’s track team at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet, placing seventh in the javelin and ninth in the shot put.

Junior Kasey Wilhoit had two singles to help lead Purdue softball to wins in three of four games against visiting Ohio State.

Greenwood

Franklin College sophomore Janae Johnson established a new personal best at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet in Terre Haute, running a time of 17.56 seconds in the 100 hurdles.

Reid Werner pitched a complete-game shutout for UIndy baseball at Southern Indiana, 4-0, throwing a three-hitter and striking out nine.

Taylor junior T.J. Bass delivered four hits and drove in two runs in a 22-1 romp against Marian. He also singled and scored in the team’s 5-4 win over the Knights.

UIndy softball split a doubleheader against Maryville and then took two from Lindenwood to improve to 37-5 on the season. Catcher Lexy Rees belted a two-run homer for the Greyhounds in the finale, a 7-3 victory.
