Edward Oakes

GREENWOOD

Edward Oakes, 93, of Greenwood passed away January 19. He was born July 10, 1924 in Hosmer, SD to Ludwina Jochim.

Ed went to school in Eagle Butte, SD. His family moved to Soudan, MN and he attended Villard High School. Ed was one of ten children who grew up on a farm. After school, he joined the US Army in 1943 and had his basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. Ed was accepted to Cooks and Bakers School. Later he went to Camp Campbell, KY and was assigned to be a driver and gunner as a medium tank crewman in the 20th battalion. His battalion was en route to the Philippine Islands when the war ended. After spending two years in the Philippines, he was honorably discharged. He left the farm and moved to Indianapolis and worked in the bread business. The rest of his working years were spent in the grocery business with Standard, Preston-Safeway, Mr. D’s and Hamptons. He made many close friends throughout those years. They still get together once a week for breakfast. We have to thank those friends for being unbelievable loyal and close. He was a member of Community Church of Greenwood.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife’s Sarah and Maradeen, son, Jimmy.

He married Sharon Kiesel in 2003 and was loved by her and her family. He is survived by wife, Sharon, son, Jay, daughter, Peggy (Rodger) Hall, son, Les (Valli) Thomas; grandchildren, Debi (Tom) Tucker, Jeff (Denise) Hall, John (Nicole), Ronnie (Karin), Jake; nieces, nephews other grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Ed was an honest man, a loyal friend, a loving father, grandfather, and husband. He will be sorely missed and forever remembered.

A memorial gathering will be Saturday, January 27, from 2:00 to 4:00 with a memorial service starting at 4:00 pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St.

We are grateful for the wonderful care given to him by the staff at Kindred/Southpointe Health Care and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
