Greenwood Christian Academy: Sarah Mangan

A summer at a camp focused on molecular biology helped a Whiteland teen solidify her career path.

But instead of learning more about her love for science, Sarah Mangan found she truly enjoyed sharing what she had learned with others. That experience at the camp at Hillsdale College during high school opened her eyes to the possibility of becoming a teacher, Mangan said.

"I loved working in the college lab, but it wasn’t so much the lab work I loved, but coming back and explaining to my friends and family," Mangan said.

"What I loved the most was sharing about it."

For Mangan, who is co-salutatorian at Greenwood Christian Academy, her dream job would be coming back to her school to teach. For the past two years she has worked as a tutor for math and sciences courses for sixth- and seventh-grade students.

Mangan attributed her love of science to her mother, who has a bachelor’s degree in biology.

She began attending Greenwood Christian Academy as a sophomore, having previously been home-schooled. The transition to attending the private school was seamless, and after her first semester, she realized that her perfect GPA meant she had a shot at being valedictorian or salutatorian.

"I always strive for the best grades possible," she said.

The biggest challenge to keeping her 4.0 GPA were courses she took at Franklin College, including biology and speech.

"I had to fight for my A," Mangan said.

The biggest change was adjusting to how college grades revolve primarily around just a handful of exams, she said.

Mangan chose to attend Taylor University because she was able to get a full scholarship to the private school, which will include leadership training, she said. She plans to major in biology education.

She also wants to have the opportunity to study abroad, potentially in Ecuador, she said.
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="Sarah Mangan" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
Name: Sarah Mangan
