Woman arrested on child neglect charges

A Greenwood woman was arrested after officers said they found her passed out while her daughter was playing alone outside for hours.

Ashley Crandall, 28, was arrested on a charge of neglect of a dependent.

A resident called police around 6:45 p.m. Monday and told them that she was concerned about Crandall because the woman’s 8-year-old child had been playing outside alone for hours, a Greenwood Police Department report said. The resident told police that the girl came into her house and that when she called the girl’s mother she couldn’t understand her because her speech was slurred, the report said.

When an officer arrived at Crandall’s home, she was found passed out on the floor, and police said she appeared to be intoxicated when they woke her. A test showed she had a .06 percent blood-alcohol content, the report said.

Crandall told police that she always lets her daughter ride her bike around the neighborhood and that her daughter has her phone number and is supposed to call if she enters anyone’s home. Crandall said she didn’t remember receiving a call earlier in the day and didn’t know where her daughter was or how long she had been gone, the report said.

Police contacted the the department of child services, and the girl was sent to stay with a relative, the report said.

Crandall, 502 W. Broadway St., was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail. She was held on $1,200 bond.
