Eva A Watkins

GREENWOOD

Eva Alene Burton Watkins passed away on June 1, 2021 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born on September 5, 1930 in Adair County, Columbia, KY a daughter of William Alec Burton and Rosa Black Burton. Her love of family fueled her to never give up. Momma was so proud of her large family, and she is survived by her daughters: Sherry Burton Devine (John), Karen Watkins Melvin (Randall), Pamela Watkins Weaver, Dawn Watkins and sons Dwight Watkins (Linda) and Jeff Watkins (Brenda). We are up to 66 family members with another on the way, which includes children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and spouses. She enjoyed her part as the matriarch in her family’s 5 generations. At family gatherings, she would spread her arms and claim “This is all because of me!” She would stand by you if you needed support in any way, whether you were right or wrong.

She attended the former Greenwood Nazarene Church and was the recordholder for the longest attendance. She was passionate in her faith of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her love for the Lord inspired all those she met. Her faith never wavered no matter the challenges she had to face. She could quote scripture and had read the Bible all the way through seven times. God led her to make hard decisions on family and financial matters with determination and perseverance. Her smile was contagious and genuine and always eager to engage in conversation. Babies never lay down as long as she was around; she wanted to hold them as soon as they entered the house. She enjoyed working the soil and growing flowers and vegetables. As like all her Family, everything she planted grew tall and strong. She was a long-term employee of and retired from Arvin Automotive. Prior to that, she was employed at RCA, Johnson County Memorial Hospital, Valle Vista Hospital, and provided daycare for numerous children through her home daycare service. Her favorite daytime television shows included the soap operas and gameshows. She always said she would love to win something on those shows.

She loved all of God’s furry and flying creatures were special, especially her dogs and birds. The one exception was squirrels! They would get into her plants and hide nuts and dig them up. She would stand on the porch and throw walnuts at them. One time she hit one in the head, it fell down on the ground for a few seconds and then got up and ran away! She loved to tell that story. Momma could make connections easily because she focused on others more than herself. She made time to help anyone she could. Neighbors and friends adored her and relished their time together. Momma was never vain, but she liked to make sure hair was curled, and her lipstick and eyebrows applied correctly!

Bluegrass Christian music with a little Elvis and Mac Davis made her day. She loved listening to her music as she worked around the house. Her favorite food was fried chicken from KFC along with their famous slaw. She was the best cook and always had a meal ready when she knew you coming and loved trying new recipes. She had a beautiful smile, compassionate, loving and devoted mother and grandmother and friend. We will miss seeing her face light up when the family and friends came around. She was truly a wonderful inspiration and a beacon to all who knew her. Preceding her in death were her parents (Alec/Rosa), Harold Burton (Brother), Eddie Burton (Brother) and Eva Rae Wilson Burton (Sister in law), Rollin Burton (Brother) and Evelyn (Teaner) McQueary Burton (Sister in law), Stephen Harold Watkins (Son), RB Watkins (Husband), Bryan Stephen Weaver (Grandson). She is happy now with her son, parents, and brothers, all looking down on us from Heaven.
