Cheers and adventures to 60

Just like the 4,000-year-old Babylonian number system that relies on a base 60, I too, am now a sexagesimal.

If I had known how much fun ‘base 60’ was, I’d have sped the process. Not only have actress Emma Thompson, NBA great Magic Johnson, Marie Osmond and Flava Flav turned 60 this year — so has Barbie.

1977 Greenwood High School graduates Lisa Pettijohn Williams, Gayla Gunn and Carla Hagner Gregory embraced their ‘base 60,’ and continue to send birthday cheers to the newbies and extend a hearty “welcome to the club.”

“Hagner Gregory noted on her Facebook page: “Cheers to new experiences and adventures in my 60’s!”

Clue No. 1

Last Sunday after going for a mother/daughter birthday massage, I felt something was a little off. I knew something was up during the car ride there when Alex pulled some makeup out of her purse and uncharacteristically offered: “Do you want some mascara?”

Clue No. 2

In my rush to get out the door, I had changed out of my church clothes and went sans make-up and apparently matching clothes. (On my behalf, I threw on some stretchy pants that were comfortable to wear during a massage). Fifteen minutes before dinner in a Marshall’s dressing room I was trying on an outfit when Phoebe said, “You could just pay for it and wear it out of here.” I immediately said, “Phoebe, look me in the eyes, is anyone else coming to dinner besides our immediate six?”

She didn’t speak and averted her eyes.

It was at that moment that I realized my shirt did not even match my pants, not even close. You know those “before” and “after” photos in all the fashion magazines? Yep, I undoubtedly was the “before.”

When we got back into the car to head to dinner, I rummaged through my purse for makeup and thanked them for semi-alerting me to my surprise, big family birthday party. Alex kindly responded in the sweetest way: “We didn’t want you to walk in there looking all busted.”

The hubby had arranged a big family party and I was given the best present which Chloe, Alex and Phoebe had compiled into a beautiful hard-backed, accordion-like book entitled ,“Letters on the occasion of your 60th,” the gift of memories in the form of words.

I concur with Carla: “Cheers to new experiences and adventures in my 60’s!”
