Letter: Letter to the editor John Stiles

Thank you, Michele Holtkamp

To the editor:

I had just told my wife you were leaving the Daily Journal. Her response: “Is she going to someplace better?” My knee-jerk answer: “Anything would be better.”

I shocked myself with the answer. I realized I had just spurted out a “Rorschach test” response to the picture of a staffer leaving the employ of a newspaper in 2019.

As a lifetime student of newspapers and a late-in-life participant in their 21st century death-knell, I have formed a deep respect and admiration for the diminishing list of reporters and editors who, like you, have kept the ideals of responsible journalism alive.

After reading about your 18 years of contributions to the Daily Journal in your Opinion Page farewell, experience told me there was again a part of the story you were leaving out — that you did all of this for peanuts in your paycheck compared to most of the citizens you wrote about and all the people you worked for.

Good luck in your new position in the Governor’s office. You deserve it.
