Letter: Real cops should demand action

To the editor:

Along with millions of Americans, I witnessed the slow murder of George Floyd by psychotic Minneapolis police officer, one Derek Chaun as did three fellow psychotic policemen. In my mind, and equally disturbing was the revelation the officer in question had been cited some 18 times for brutality and excessive force. It appears an officer has to murder a citizen before he is fired. So much for police investigating themselves. Assuming the Minneapolis Police Department is "typical," it is little wonder cops have earned such low esteem and confidence in America and are viewed with suspicion. Citizen cell phone cameras have exposed many cops in a most negative light, and indeed, when citizens began the practice of filming, they were arrested.

Americans will not soon forget the murder of George Floyd and the smug, nonchalant face of his murderer, and the inaction of three fellow psychotics. Until police departments are investigated by outside individuals, and "rotten apples" dismissed, there will not be any progress in ridding departments of the latter, and restoration of public confidence. Real cops should demand such action, union rules notwithstanding.

Kenneth R. DeVoe

Greenwood
