Harold Samuel Tinkle, Sr., 100, passed away June 18, 2020 in Franklin, IN. Sam was born May 13, 1920 to Guy E. and Reba E. (Christian) Tinkle in Greenwood, IN.
</p>
<p>
He graduated from Center Grove High School in 1938. He was honored by the school during the 2019 Football Homecoming as the oldest living Alumni.
</p>
<p>
He worked for Golden Guernsey Farms, Inc., for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He also farmed and raised livestock until moving from the farm in 2008. He served as a Trustee at Mt Auburn UMC where he was a member for 38 years. Prior to that he was a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church. He was a lifelong member of the Johnson County Antique Machinery Association. After he retired, he enjoyed woodworking, making several wishing wells, birdhouses and various outside tree and lawn ornaments which he gave to family and friends. Sam’s love of Farmall tractors has been passed down to his sons, several grandsons and great-grandsons. His first tractor was a 1941 Farmall H which has been restored and is currently owned by his youngest son, Presley. At this time, there are 25 antique tractors in the family owned by 2 generations.

Sam married Arvetta Lorene (Kinnick) Tinkle, January 13, 1940 and they were married for 41 years. They were blessed with 16 children. All their initials were P. E. T., with the exception of Sam, Jr and Paulette (who has our mother’s middle name). Arvetta passed away January 16, 1981. Then, Sam married Mary Louise (Lochray) Hacker Tinkle, March 26, 1983. Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Arvetta, his son, Paul Tinkle (2014), his daughter Penny Tinkle (1972), his granddaughter, Tracie Miller (1974), his great-granddaughter Charlotte Tinkle (2018), his parents and 4 brothers and 5 sisters.

Survivors include his sister, Martha Frances (Tinkle) Burkey. Children, Phil (Joyce Whitley), Priscilla Dashiell, Peggy (Bob) Harold, Pam (David) Harold, Pete (Pat Whalin), Patrick (Wilma), Portia (Larry) Hughes, Perry (Susie), Sam, Jr (Nancy), Patricia, aka Trish (Bruce) Jones, Paulette (Jack) Lott, Preston (Brandy), Parvin (Julie) and Presley (Julia) and 4 step-children. He is also survived by 61 grandchildren, 121 great-grandchildren and 47 great-great-grandchildren (with 5 more on the way).

The family wishes to thank the Staff at Morning Pointe Assisted Living and Main Street Hospice, both in Franklin, for the wonderful care that Sam received. A special thanks as well for helping the family to celebrate his 100th birthday in tractor style with a parade.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 22, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home 1605 S. State Road 135. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt Auburn UMC, 3300 W Stones Crossing Road, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Services will be conducted by Rev. Jeff Buck.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt Auburn UMC or the Johnson County Antique Machinery Assoc. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home.
