Kids ‘bring out the best’

The Boys and Girls Club of Franklin has a new athletics director. Alec Dewitt recently took the position.

When did you start the job?

Sept. 8.

Why did you want the job?

I wanted this job for many reasons, but two specific reasons stick out more so than the others. The first is that I absolutely love working with kids. I’m not sure what it is, but I believe they bring out the best in me. The second reason is that the city of Franklin has given me more opportunity in my life than I could ever ask for. I want to pay the city back by providing its youth with as much opportunity as possible. The Boys and Girls Club mission is “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” Every time I read this I know I am 100 percent in the right place.

What does your job entail?

My responsibilities as the athletic director is to organize and run any sports program associated with the Franklin Boys and Girls Club, as well as help create new programs for the youth of Johnson County.

What are you most looking forward to at your job?

I am really excited about creating new programs for kids and opening the door to areas the Boys and Girls club hasn’t exactly explored yet. I am going in with the attitude that anything that aligns with the Boys and Girls club mission is something worth trying.

What do you expect a typical day to be like?

I expect a majority of my day to be spent on the go. When I say that, I am really meaning with kids, outside, at one of our facilities or fields, and not behind a desk.

What is the most difficult part of the job?

I probably haven’t been here long enough to discover a real difficult part, but if I had to pick now, it would be that time goes by too fast here. You would think while at a job that’s a great thing, but as I said, we have a lot of plans in the works that takes time to develop.

Why did you want to work at the Boys and Girls Club?

I wanted to work at the Boys and Girls Club for many reasons. As I said before, I love kids and I see the club as a great place of opportunity for kids. The staff here has done an amazing service to this town and county. The hours they work and the passion they have for kids is inspiring. If I am going to work a majority of my adult life, I am going to work with people that inspire me and a company with a mission I believe in.
