Letter: Today toxicity trumps rationality in politics

To the editor:

In today’s toxic, divisive political atmosphere, calm, rational voices struggle to be heard, especially when they come from people you might normally be at odds with philosophically.

So it is refreshing to hear the following, which came from an interview recently:

“We have become very comfortable with not thinking things through and debating things. We have decided that rather than confront the disagreements, grievances and differences of opinion, we’ll just simply annihilate the person who we disagree with — and I don’t think that’s going to work.

“At some point we have to recognize that we’re destroying our institutions and undermining our institutions.”

The speaker was Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Whether you agree with his court rulings or not, we all would be wise to heed his advice here.
