City takes over some I-65 grounds maintenance

The city of Greenwood is hoping to clean up some of the first areas visitors see when they come into the city.

Greenwood and the Indiana Department of Transportation recently reached an agreement that would allow the city to take over the responsibility for maintaining the grass areas near the Interstate 65 interchanges at Main Street and County Line Road, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said.

The request is one Greenwood has been pushing for years, in an effort to beautify those entrances to the city. In the past two weeks, workers from the city’s parks department have been removing trees and shrubs, as well as picking up trash at those sites, Myers said.

Future plans could include installing a “Welcome to Greenwood” sign, with decorative landscaping, Myers said.

The city’s agreement with the state is a one-year test run, which could be extended depending on how the arrangement goes, Myers said. Myers credited Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe McGuinness, a former mayor of Franklin, with helping getting the agreement in place.
