Softball sectional brackets revealed

Last spring, the Edinburgh softball team put together one of the best seasons in school history, advancing all the way to the Class A semistate before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Indianapolis Lutheran.

The Lancers won’t have to wait long for a chance at avenging that loss — the Saints have been moved into the Edinburgh Sectional this year.

The host team received a first-round bye and will play Greenwood Christian in a semifinal game. Should the Lancers advance, Lutheran will likely be waiting for them in the final.

The two schools split a doubleheader on April 21.

“I think it’s going to be another close game,” Edinburgh coach Stephen Clark said of another potential meeting with the Saints. “We match up well … whoever makes the least amount of mistakes will win the game.”

In the Class 4A sectional at Franklin Central, Greenwood and Whiteland will be meeting up in a first-round game, with the winner to face either Martinsville or the host Flashes. Center Grove, and Franklin both received first-round byes; they will face one another in the semifinals.

The unbeaten Trojans are ranked first in the state and 12th in the nation by MaxPreps.

Indian Creek faces a daunting challenge in its Class 3A sectional at New Palestine. The Braves did receive a bye to the semifinals, where they’ll face either Rushville or Beech Grove, but a trip to the championship game would likely mean a date with the host Dragons, the defending state champion and the No. 1-ranked team in 3A.
