Letter: State representative should engage in debates when seeking re-election

To the editor:

Dear Woody Burton,

As you know, I am helping Cindy Reinert campaign to replace you in the Indiana House of Representatives.

When you and I spoke on the telephone recently, I suggested that we plan a public debate between you and Cindy. I sensed that you were reluctant, but I hope I was wrong.

We believe a debate would be helpful to the citizens of District 58 who are deciding whom to vote for on Nov. 6.

We think voters want to know each candidate’s position on things like funding for education, keeping our students safe at school and repairing our crumbling roads.

After 30 years in the legislature, you must know that public debates are an important responsibility of holding that office. I have noticed that this year many Republican candidates are refusing to debate. I hope you are not in that group.

You can pick the time and place for this debate, within reason. (For example, 5 a.m. in Nashville, Tennessee is not reasonable.)

We look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Margaret McGovern
