Letter: Progressive residents not welcome in Christian community

To the editor:

On May 2, local Christian Clergy held a World Day of Prayer, which was hosted by the City of Franklin in its city hall meeting room (“We swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States, with the exception of the ‘Establishment Clause’”). According to an article in the Daily Journal:

At a time when the country seems more divided than ever, local religious leaders are hoping to unite the community in faith. People are invited to gather for the National Day of Prayer… Local pastors will read scripture and lead prayers for Franklin, the county and the entire country, all centered around the theme of “Love One Another.”

On Aug. 29, a local member of the Christian clergy described a significant number of our population as “shibboleth.” Apparently, people whose views are “progressive” are not to be respected or welcomed in Franklin’s Christian community. So much for “uniting the community in faith” and “loving one another.”

“Give me that old time religion

Give me that old time religion

Give me that old time religion

It’s good enough for me.”

If me is white, Christian, Republican, homophobic, pro-life and believes the trickle-down effect of supply side economics will eliminate poverty.
