Caucus planned for Franklin City Council seat

The Johnson County Republican Party will appoint a new member to the Franklin City Council after council member Drew Eggers resigned earlier this month.

Drew Eggers, who has served on the council since 2016 and was recently elected to serve a second term, said he is stepping down because he is moving out of the city. He submitted his resignation Feb. 14, according to a letter from the Johnson County GOP.

“It’s bittersweet,” Eggers said.

He grew up in Franklin, and is a local attorney.

A caucus to replace Eggers is scheduled at 7 p.m. March 5, in the council chambers at Franklin City Hall, 70 E. Monroe St. Five precinct committee members will cast secret ballots until a simply majority select the same candidate. Whoever wins will serve the remainder of the term, which ends Dec. 31, 2023.

Eggers represented district 3, which covers the west side of the city. Any Republican who lives in that district and would like to be considered for the position should apply with Beth Boyce, chairperson of the Johnson County Republican Party, by 7 p.m. Monday, by submitting a letter of interest and an executed and notarized copy of the CEB-5 form to 845 Richart Lane, Greenwood.

The seven-member board sets annual spending for the city, makes policy changes, adopts new local rules and ordinances, approves new taxes and appoints members to various city boards.
