County’s death toll climbs to 22

Another resident of a Franklin senior care facility where a COVID-19 outbreak has occurred has died, local health officials said Tuesday.

The Johnson County Health Department reported that a 77-year-old Otterbein Franklin resident died, bringing to eight the number of people who have died due to an outbreak at Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community.

At least 26 residents and 19 employees have contracted the virus, according to Otterbein’s latest update on Friday.

A 70-year-old Greenwood resident also died after testing positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, said Betsy Swearingen, director of the county health department. The county’s death toll is 22.

The county health department on Tuesday reported nine more laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing to 341 the number of cases in Johnson County, Swearingen said.

The Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday said the number of presumptive positive cases for COVID-19 in the state has risen to 8,527 after the emergence of 291 more cases.

The department reported the state’s first case on March 6.

The state said Tuesday that the death toll in the state rose to 387, up from 350 the previous day.

Deaths and positive cases are not always reported immediately, which means the numbers can move inconsistently day to day.

The state reported that 46,017 people have been tested so far, up from 44,539 in Sunday’s report. The ISDH said the test numbers reflect only those tests reported to the department and the numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.

Indianapolis reported 3,063 cases—up from 3,012 cases the previous day. The state reported 141 deaths in the city, up from 123 on Monday. The state said 15,046 people have been tested.

As for surrounding counties, Hamilton had 499 positive cases; Hendricks 350; Boone 125; Hancock 121; Madison 263; Morgan 104, and Shelby 77.

Every Indiana county has at least one case.

Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases—possibly thousands more—than those indicated by the number of tests.

As of Tuesday, 584,073 cases had been reported in the United States, with 23,709 deaths, according to a running tally maintained by health researchers at Johns Hopkins University & Medicine. More than 44,300 people have recovered.
