Letter: What death rate are we willing to undergo?

To the editor:

During this national obsession with COVID-19, it is time to try and understand comparisons. To prevent road deaths, we could lower the speed limit to 5 mph. There was a time when there were no speed limits, but that changed with the invent of the speeding automobile. People began to die in automobile accidents, yet nowhere was there a speed limit of 5 mph that would prevent almost all deaths. People began to compare going fast and causing more fatalities to the convenience of saving time by going fast. There began a never ending search to find the speed limit that would balance the convenience of driving fast to the death rate at various speeds on various roadways. Like speed limits, what death rate are we willing to undergo to allow saving our economy and the personal well being that results from a strong economy?
