Man dies following construction accident at The Madison

A man is dead following an accident at The Madison construction site Friday afternoon.

Greenwood police and firefighters were called around 3 p.m. to the 500 block of S. Madison Avenue on a report of a man being pinned in a pit at The Madison construction site. When officers arrived, they found that a concrete box had fallen from a crane at the construction site, pinning a man, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief of police.

Based on preliminary reports, construction workers were lowering the concrete box — which is used for drainage — into the pit when it somehow landed on the man. It also appears the man was instantly pulled out of the pit once workers were able to safely get him out, Fillenwarth said.

Medics performed CPR on the man at the scene. He was taken to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead, Fillenwarth said.

Right now, the incident is believed to be a workplace accident, and the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or IOSHA, has been notified. Greenwood police are conducting a death investigation in connection to the accident as well, he said.

The man’s identity could not be released at press time Friday evening.
