Police: Greenwood shooting stems from drug deal, home invasion

An Indianapolis man was charged with burglary and another man was shot to death after a witness said they invaded a Greenwood home Monday.

When Greenwood police arrived at the home in the 1200 block of Odell Lane at around 2:45 p.m. on Monday afternoon they found the body of Jerimiah S. Martin, 20 of Indianapolis, who was dead of multiple gunshot wounds. An Indianapolis 16-year-old told police they shot him and said Martin and another man, Marcus D. Jones, Jr., 20 of Indianapolis, threatened him and attempted to rob him.

Jones is being held at the Johnson County jail on a preliminary charge of burglary as a level 2 felony. His bond is set at $30,000.

The juvenile and a Greenwood woman, 21, who resides at the home, were questioned in connection with the shooting, a press release from Greenwood police says.

During questioning, the woman said she had received a call from someone she knew only as “Black Boy” who wanted to purchase marijuana from her. “Black Boy” was later identified as Jones, the release says.

The woman allegedly told Jones she wouldn’t sell him marijuana because he owed her money from an earlier transaction. Jones reportedly told her he would pay her what he owed and the cost of the additional marijuana, so she agreed to sell to him, the release says.

Jones allegedly came to the Odell Lane home for the sale and was met by the juvenile, who asked for the money. Jones reportedly told the juvenile he didn’t have enough money but he would be back, the release says.

Jones returned with Martin, who allegedly brandished a handgun and threatened the juvenile, demanding he show him where the drugs are. The juvenile lead them to the master bedroom, the release says.

During the confrontation, Martin set his handgun on the bed and allegedly picked up a rifle that was in the room. The juvenile then reportedly picked up the handgun and started shooting at Martin, the release says.

A struggle ensued and the juvenile wrestled the rifle away from Martin and shot him with it multiple times. The gunshot wounds were fatal, the release says.

Jones fled the scene and was later stopped by police in Indianapolis. Greenwood Police then questioned him and booked him on the preliminary charge, the release says.

The woman was not home at the time of the shooting, she told police. Her identity is not being published because no drug charges have been filed at this time.

Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said the incident is still under investigation and he can’t comment on any other charges that may be filed at this time.

As the incident is still under investigation, anyone with information is asked to call the Greenwood Police tip line at 317-865-0300.
