Railroad work closure planned on Whiteland’s Main Street

The railroad crossing on Main Street in Whiteland will close for 24 hours Thursday to repair the crossing surface.

The Louisville & Indiana Railroad planned the project to replace the wooden planks that currently serve as a crossing surface at Main Street with a new rubber surface. This work can’t be done while the road is open to traffic, so a closure is needed.

The Main Street crossing will be closed starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, and will reopen Friday at 6 a.m. Drivers are asked to use the signed detour route on U.S. 31 to avoid and go around the closure. Nearby roads through residential areas will be closed to through traffic. Those traveling into town on Whiteland Road from Interstate 65 can avoid the closure by following Graham Road.

This same work was completed on the rail crossing on Jefferson Street in Franklin last week, and will be completed on Earlywood Drive Tuesday.
