I see women in my neighborhood mowing their lawns. My wife doesn’t mow our lawn. I don’t think she will ever mow the lawn. Lawn mowing season is here and it just kinda drives me crazy trying to figure out why she won’t mow the lawn.

What’s in the names we give our children? Contemporary parents might choose names to honor ancestors, to signify something from the family’s religion or ethnic heritage, or simply because the parents like the name.

I suppose I can be forgiven for relapsing into occasional geezer mode, given my advanced age and deteriorating mental capabilities. Then again, there really is no excuse for letting it happen too often — or even at all.

Juul Labs, the maker of the leading vaping device, Juul, is doing quite well. So well that the big tobacco company, Altria, bought a 35% interest, of $12.8 billion, in Juul, which has 75% of the e-cigarette market.

I don’t recall my parents ever using the term “Memorial Day,” except when referring to the Indianapolis 500-mile race.

The Adult Learning Center (ALC) is an adult literacy department that has been a part of the Johnson County Public Library (JCPL) since 1985. The ALC’s mission is to provide literacy services to adults in Johnson County. Over the years, the department has changed with population trends. Today, the ALC primarily provides services to adults learning English as a second language and learning about American culture. We also have services available to adults who want to brush up on basic skills in reading, writing, math and computers, or prepare for tests for a driver’s license, CDL, HSE or citizenship.

I have learned that when I am on the computer, as long as I stick with my banking and bill-paying sites, and as long as I don’t linger too long on emails or the two or three daily news sites I visit, I am pretty safe from the curse of the Internet Black Hole. I readily admit this is a discipline I often struggle to maintain.

The Consumer Price Index was released this week, showing inflation at 8.3 percent, year over year. The number is not especially surprising, just a tad better than March. We have probably passed the month of ‘peak’ inflation for this cycle. The reason for this is simply that March’s inflation figures were reported at the beginning of the oil price effects from the Russian invasion of Ukraine and prior to Federal Reserve raising rates. The Federal Reserve is now tightening the money supply, and the large oil price spikes have eased slightly. Still, this leaves open the question of how long unusually high inflation will last, what are its causes and how might it be remedied.
