Trojans, Warriors earn medals at state track

BLOOMINGTON

The shin troubles that have plagued Haley Goines off and on through much of her senior track and field season flared up again during warmups at Friday’s state meet at Indiana University.

The Center Grove senior wasn’t about to let the pain ruin her teammates’ day, too.

Goines was unable to finish any of her three individual events, but she managed to come back and gut her way through her leg on the 4×100-meter relay, helping the Trojans to a sixth-place finish in that event.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

“The day was pretty emotional,” Goines said. “I felt really sad and angry that I couldn’t perform in my events to the ability that I know I can, but I knew if there was one event that I needed to do, it was this 4×1, because it’s a team thing – and I can’t let my team down just because I’m hurt.”

Goines came into the day poised to score in all four events of her final high school meet, but she was battling pain before the long jump started and knew after her first attempt that she wasn’t going to be able to compete. After fouling on her first jump, she walked down the runway and across the board for fouls on her final two preliminary attempts, walking back to her seat in tears both times.

She was unable to compete in the high jump or 100 hurdles, but she at least lined up to start in both to remain eligible for the relay. Goines ran the second leg of the Trojans’ 4×100 team, helping Ashley Wheat, Julia Riley and Kiyah Yeast cross the line with a time of 48.20 seconds.

“She came through in the 4×1 and pushed through,” Yeast said of Goines. “Without her, we would not have gotten sixth.”

Yeast also made it on to the podium in her two individual events. The sophomore was fourth in the 100 meters in 11.90 seconds, and came back after a lightning delay to take sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.93.

Riley wound up 15th in the long jump at 17 feet, 1 3/4 inches. She tripped late in her 100 hurdles preliminary, finishing one spot ahead of Goines in 26th.

Center Grove finished with 14 points, good for 17th place in the team standings.

Whiteland freshman Isabella Jackson made a splash in her state debut, coming up with a big performance in the middle heat of the 300 hurdles to finish fifth in 44.81 seconds. Jackson was also 13th in the high jump, clearing 5-5.

“I’m really grateful that I got on the podium,” Jackson said. “It was great to get the experience; I know next time that I can get better.”

Also competing for the Warriors was Reagan Emberton, who was 16th in the discus at 119-7.

Greenwood’s Hanna Anderson placed 10th in the 400 meters with a time of 57.60 seconds. Teammate Emily Bonser finished 13th in the shot put (38-10) and 15th in the discus (121-2).

Franklin’s 4×100 relay quartet of Cami Kelsay, Rachel Simmons, Emma Beavins and Kloie Doublin was 17th in 49.71 seconds. Emma Treibic was 23rd in the 1,600 meters (5:19.35), while Haydn Driver was 24th in the pole vault, clearing a height of 10 feet.

Edinburgh’s Taylor Tatlock placed 27th in the discus, measuring out at 112 feet even. Emily Sonderman of Roncalli, a Greenwood, resident, posted a time of 57.96 seconds in the 400 and finished 12th.
