Trojans’ Yeast heads girls track All-County team

Kiyah Yeast didn’t technically reach every goal that she had set for herself prior to her sophomore season on the track, but she isn’t complaining.

The Center Grove sophomore had hoped to get her time in the 100-meter dash down to 11.8 seconds, but she was forced to settle for 11.90 — which was good enough for a fourth-place finish at the state meet.

"I count that, because I was super close," Yeast said.

After a season that resulted in three state medals and three school records, Yeast is the Daily Journal’s Athlete of the Year for girls track.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]

In addition to her fourth-place state finish in the 100, Yeast was also sixth in the 200 meters (24.93 seconds) and anchored the Trojans’ 4×100 relay team, joining Ashley Wheat, Haley Goines and Julia Riley for another sixth-place finish.

She hasn’t quite reached the mountaintop in Indiana just yet, but Yeast feels that coming so close as a sophomore can only help her going forward.

"It’s really good for me to know where I am at the end of sophomore year and what people are running to be the top in the state," she said, "so now going into junior and senior year I know where I need to be."

Locally, there is no doubt about where she is. While she maintains a healthy respect for her area competition ("You can’t underestimate anyone," she said), Yeast hasn’t been seriously threatened in any county or sectional sprint since she started high school.

She’s already established herself as the best sprinter in Center Grove history, easily eclipsing the individual standards previously held by current University of Dayton runner Olivia Rassel. Having watched her become the first Trojan to break 12 seconds in the 100 and 25 seconds in the 200, one has to wonder how much lower Yeast can go over her final two seasons.

"We’ll see," she said with a smile. "Hopefully way lower."
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="All-County team" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
The 2018 All-Johnson County team for girls track and field:
